The source of all power is Bondyei (Bon Dieu, or good god).
He is the Creator. But he is distant from the world - and humanity.
Thus, he can be reached only by spiritual commissioners.
All other spirits belong to three main families or nations of Loa -
Rada (also Radha), Petro (also Pethro, Petwo),
and Ghede (Also Guede, or Gede).
The Loa of Guédé
are the family of spirits that embody the powers of death and fertility.
They are traditionally led by the Barons (La Croix, Samedi, Cimitière, Kriminel),
and Maman Brigitte. The Ghede as a family are loud, rude
(although rarely to the point of real insult), sexual, and
usually a lot of fun. As those who have lived already, they have
nothing to fear, and frequently will display how past consequence and
feeling they are when they come through in a service - eating glass,
raw chillies, and anointing their sensitive areas with chili rum for example.
Their traditional colors are black and purple.
Maman Brijit | female | She is the protectress of cemeteries | She is one of the family of the Gede or Guede, the Vodou
death spirits whose numbers include Bawon Samdi, Bawon Gede, and Gede
Nimbo or Nibo, guardian of children.

The Loa of Petro
are generally the more fiery, occasionally aggressive and warlike Loa.
They include Erzulie Dantor, Marinette, Ogoun, and Kalfu (Carrefour).
Their traditional color is red.
Kalfu | male | The evil master of the crossroads | He is the Petro manifestation of Papa Legba and can be quite
dangerous, whereas Legba, his
kinder Rada counterpart, is associated with the sun,
Kalfou is regarded as a Loa of the moon.
Kalfu also controls the crossroads. Not unlike Hecate in
Greek religion and myth, Kalfu controls the evil forces of
the spirit world. He allows the crossing of bad luck,
deliberate destruction, misfortune, injustice.
Kalfu controls the in-between points of the crossroads,
the off-center points. Legba controls the positive
spirits of the day; Kalfu controls the malevolent
spirits of the night.
When Kalfu mounts a person everyone at the service stops speaking
because he allows evil loa to come to the ceremony. He claims
that most of the important loa know him and he collaborates
with them. Kalfu says that some people claim he is a demon
but he denies this. A respected loa though he is not liked
much, he is the grand master of charms and sorceries and
is closely associated with black magic.

The Loa of Rada
are generally the older, more beneficent spirits. They include Legba,
Loko, Ayizan, Dhamballah Wedo and Ayida-Weddo, Erzulie Freda, La
Sirene, and Agoueh.
Their traditional color is white (as opposed to the specific
colors of individual Loa).
Papa Legba | male | The most important Loa | He stands at a spiritual crossroads and gives (or denies)
permission to speak with the spirits.
His permission is needed for any communication between
mortals and the loa - he opens and closes the doorway.
