THE CHINESE DRAGON

The Chinese Dragon, usually depicted as a long snake having yaws and numerous claws is one of the Chinese Four Fabulous Animals. It has long been a potent symbol of auspicious power in Chinese folklore and art. It is also the embodiment of the concept of the celestical yang and associated with the weather as the bringer of rain and water in general.

Since, the Dragon is the primal celtestical power it is the symbol for the emperor, too.

The number nine is the highest yang number and therefore considered lucky in China. thus, Chinese dragons are frequently connected with the number nine. For example, a Chinese dragon is normally described in terms of nine attributes and usually has 117 scales - 81 (9x9) male and 36 (9x4) female.

The "Nine Dragon Wall" depicts nine different dragons, and is found in imperial palaces and gardens (Part of the "Nine Dragon Wall" in the Forbidden City, Bejing, China). There are nine forms of the dragon and the dragon has nine children.
