The four basic directions are given by north, east, south and west. The Eight DirectionsDividing the Number Four, representing the directions, gives eight possibilities, representing even more choice of direction, i.e. providing all directions in the plane. E.g. the possible movements on a chess board is eight. Furthermore, the number eight represents all possible choices. The number eight is very important in the Indian mythology.
