DIRECTIONS

Direction is a very fundamental principle for any living being. The concept of direction is even more important than position. The correct direction for flight or attack is fundamental for surviving. Even the most primitive organism, oblivious of current position, knows to swim in the direction of light.

Dividing the Number Two, representing the concept of movement, gives four pieces, representing the choice of direction of the movement.

The Four Directions

The four basic directions are given by north, east, south and west.
For a person that is front, right, back and left. On an European map the top faces north, like a person looking north. On a Chinese map is vice versa: the top is directed south, like a person looking south.

The Eight Directions

Dividing the Number Four, representing the directions, gives eight possibilities, representing even more choice of direction, i.e. providing all directions in the plane. E.g. the possible movements on a chess board is eight.

The compass rose
A traditional compass has eight main directions. Nevertheless, indicating all choices of movement.

Furthermore, the number eight represents all possible choices. The number eight is very important in the Indian mythology. Many representations of gods and goddesses are depicted with eight arms to indicate that the gods have all the possible choices to alter the world.
