THE UNICORN

The Unicorn is the symbol for agility and eternal youth and bliss. It is always described as mysteriously beautiful. Furthermore it is the symbol for ultimate freedom and it could be captured only by unfair means. Its character is either described as a wild, un-tamable or as gentle and peaceloving. The single horn was said to be one of the most potent magical substances concerning healing, e.g. it could neutralize all poisons.

Unlike the other Mythical Animals it is often described in may differing forms and appearances. Generally, the unicorn is described as a horse with a single horn on its forehead. Traditionally, the sources from the Middleeast describe a unicorn with a goat's beard, a lion's tail, and cloven hooves. However, the symbol of the Celestical Steed is always described as a horse:

In Norse Mythology the eight legged horse Sleipnir is the steed of Odin.
In Greek Mythology the winged horse Pegasus is the steed of Zeus.

In Europe the medival knowledge of the fabulous beast stemmed from biblical and ancient sources, and the creature was variously represented as a kind of wild ass, goat, or horse.

It was often depicted Mesopotamian art, the Assyrian name was rimu. In the Hebrew Bilbe it is mentioned as Re’em.

The Chinese Kilin, Japanese Kirin, is identified with the Unicorn.
